Cornerstone delivers critical mobile infrastructure to Torr, outside Ballycastle, in rural Northern Ireland for its mobile customers

Cornerstone, the UK’s leading digital mobile infrastructure services company, is pleased to announce the completion of a vital new infrastructure project in Torr, just outside Ballycastle in Northern Ireland, for its customers Virgin Media O2 and Vodafone, in collaboration with its trusted build partner, WHP Telecoms.

The successful delivery of this complex project, deployed to enable mobile operators to provide 4G connectivity to some of the most rural parts of the region, has the potential to significantly enhance connectivity and bring huge benefits to the local community, tourists, and businesses. As part of this initiative, Cornerstone conducted an archaeological dig which showcases its commitment to due diligence and preserving the region’s heritage.

The new infrastructure in Torr addresses the long-standing connectivity challenges faced by the area’s residents and businesses. The installation is another major milestone in Cornerstone’s mission to support its customers and the community across the UK in ensuring connectivity is accessible to everyone, including underserved rural areas. The introduction of 4G in this area is especially beneficial for public safety, given the region’s coastal positioning, ensuring reliable communication during emergencies and enhancing overall safety for residents and visitors alike.

Sean McHenry, Cornerstone’s Head of Town Planning, invited Councillor Maighréad Watson to the site to witness the installation firsthand. Torr, renowned for its rich history and stunning landscapes, sits on the famed Causeway Coast Road, which is famous for the Giants Causeway, the North West 200 motorbike racing, the Carrick-a-rede rope bridge and world-class golf courses. The site is a stone’s throw from the iconic filming locations of Game of Thrones and The Northmen.

The site, steeped in history, includes a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a listed Cold War Navy listening station. Cornerstone deployed this site in consultation with the Historic Environment Division, ensuring everything was done with respect for the area’s heritage while also not leaving anyone behind from the benefits of technological advancement.

Councillor Maighréad Watson highlighted the project’s significance: “I am delighted to have supported the implementation of this much needed infrastructure, that will enable strong 4G coverage for both locals and tourists for this well visited area. The Glens has suffered from inadequate mobile and broadband connectivity, which we depend heavily on as a society. This infrastructure will make great progress for businesses and tourism. It will provide opportunities for businesses to not only complete their work on the ground and contribute to the local economy, but progress sales online and promotion of products and services. On a broader scope, it will provide opportunities for the people of The Glens to have a better connection to communicate and carry out daily necessities.”

Sean McHenry added, “As a local resident, I understand the vital importance of robust connectivity for our community. At Cornerstone, we have worked closely with locally elected members, the Historic Environment Division (HED), and the council to ensure that our infrastructure respects the unique character of our areas of outstanding natural beauty, the listed buildings and ancient monuments. Better connectivity benefits our farmers with access to real-time data, enriches tourists’ experiences, and promotes public safety by enabling faster emergency responses and better communication networks.”

Cornerstone focuses on environmentally sensitive infrastructure and complex builds with emphasis on local stakeholder consultation and sustainably responsible initiatives to protect the historical or environmental treasures of local communities.

About Torr

Torr is the closest part of Northern Ireland to Scotland — with clear views to the Mull of Kintyre — made famous by the Paul McCartney song titled after the headland. It is also the site where Marconi tested early radio, connecting Ballycastle to Rathlin Island, echoing a legacy of innovation. This project ensures that Torr remains a place where history and modernity coexist harmoniously.

About Cornerstone

What does it take to successfully manage 8,000 landlords?

by Julian Shariff, Head of Property & Estates

As the leading UK provider of mobile digital infrastructure, we fully respect and drive mutual alignment between us and property owners who enable our asset portfolio for our customers. Having overall accountability for our properties and estates is a huge undertaking with responsibility for managing our relationship with 8,000 Landlords and ensuring we fulfil our obligations to them, alongside our customers. This requires a structured and thoughtful approach to our partnership management.

From our strategic partnership with Cluttons, the implementation of the Locken App for enhanced site security, on-going training programs with our suppliers, and coming this summer our new Landlord app, we are wholly committed to being the best tenant we can be. As part of our pledge, we are focused on four key areas and initiatives that set Cornerstone apart in our approach to partnership management in the industry.

  1. Paying rent on time, every time
At the heart of our approach to leasing land for our infrastructure is a fundamental principle to treat each landlord with the respect and consideration they deserve. We recognise for them that their site deserves bespoke attention, and that they receive their rental payments in line with our lease obligations. We are delivering on this commitment, with over 93,000 payments processed every year.
  2. Staying accountable through our strategic partnership with Cluttons
To streamline communication and address landlord queries and concerns efficiently, we work seamlessly with our property management partner, Cluttons. They provide a dedicated point of contact for our landlords for a wide range of services, ensuring that their needs are promptly addressed and resolved, answering a staggering 35,000 emails every year.
  3. We’re going digital, rolling out our site access solution
In our commitment to accountability and transparency, we’ve launched the Locken app which is part of our roll-out program. This innovative solution guarantees that only authorised people gain access to our sites, enhancing security on our landlord premises. With controlled access and strict permissions, sensitive sites remain better safeguarded, and landlords are reassured that only qualified professionals are accessing their property. This summer, we will be trialing our new Landlord App for customer support and payments.
  4. Improved collaboration across our ecosystem
We hold ourselves to the highest standards of service excellence and are working with our operational site partners to review standards and compliance training. Our site engineers cover a vast estate and we recognise the need to drive consistency into our processes to ensure that everyone who represents Cornerstone on-site reflects our values.

Looking ahead, we remain dedicated to innovation and continuous improvement in how we better meet the needs of our landlords and will continue to drive our listen, act, learn program and conduct ‘Voice of Landlord’ surveys. It’s a big job but I’m proud of the estate and our landlords, and we’ll keep working to earn the title of best tenant we can be for mobile digital infrastructure.

Cornerstone CEO Pat Coxen’s experience in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park underscores the importance of mobile infrastructure and mobile connectivity

There is nothing like a real-life experience to bring home the importance of mobile phone coverage. On a cold weekend in mid-February, Pat Coxen, the CEO of Cornerstone, the largest mobile infrastructure company in the UK, was able to see first-hand the life-saving benefit that mobile infrastructure and mobile networks bring, even in the most remote areas on an everyday basis.

Pat commented, “I feel very privileged to be close enough to walk or run in Bannua Brycheiniog National Park in Wales. I headed there with a friend for a quick walk around and over Pen Y Fan and despite the wet weather, we were thoroughly enjoying the walk. As we descended one of the steepest tracks on the route, we noticed a small group of walkers on the side of the path.
A lady in the group had slipped and fallen, was in pain, and appeared to have broken her ankle, leaving the group a difficult walk/carry of at least 3 miles to the nearest car park and much further to a town. It was clear to everyone that the lady would not be walking anywhere, so the only option was to call for emergency services.

Very helpfully, the area of the incident had mobile coverage (it isn’t everywhere in the National Park), so the group leader called emergency services and, using the mobile network-enabled location-sharing app, What3Words, was able to very simply, without a map grid reference, share their location and get medical support and guidance from the rescue services.

Once we had done as much as we could to help, we continued our walk and a few minutes later, watched the emergency services rescue helicopter fly in to pick up the casualty (we hope they are well).”

Reflecting on the incident, Pat remarked, “We know that building mobile infrastructure for mobile phone companies to then make available to consumers is important, especially delivering coverage in rural areas that have traditionally had less, or no coverage. However, in pursuit of ‘hitting the numbers’, we can sometimes get a little detached from the real reason we are doing the job. I have no doubt that access to mobile coverage significantly speeded up the rescue of the injured lady and gave some medical comfort to the rest of the group that she was going to be ok”.

“As a mobile infrastructure company, Cornerstone is often met with opposition in building mobile towers. Communities and special interest groups raise visual and environmental concerns about the potential impact of mobile phone masts in remote areas and we listen carefully and respond to those concerns. At the same time, it is also true that most people rely on connectivity to live their lives, and therefore, the infrastructure is essential, not ‘nice to have’. Mobile and Fixed infrastructure and mobile phone companies are building for an inevitable future where digital connectivity will need to be ubiquitous. Connectivity isn’t just about making calls or sending messages. It enhances safety, builds connections, drives economic activity, and changes lives,” states Coxen.

Looking to the future, the Cornerstone CEO is clear that “technology and nature can and must co-exist, and this is an important balancing act; we must find the right balance between progress with preservation, delivering the transformative power of digital technology, whilst preserving the natural beauty of the countryside. As other European countries upgrade their infrastructure, maintaining pace is crucial to ensuring Britain remains at the forefront of innovation.”

Belinda Fawcett, General Counsel and Property Director at Cornerstone, commented, “This visit is about highlighting the significance of collaboration between industry and government in leading the way in bringing digital infrastructure capability to all areas of the UK in an economically viable and sustainable way.”

Addressing these challenges, Belinda Fawcett emphasised, “The necessity of appointing and funding of digital champions in local government and further support for submitted planning applications is urgently needed to accelerate the deployment of crucial digital infrastructure, to benefit the local communities.”

Women in Leadership

Bridging the Gender Divide: Cornerstone celebrates its Women in Leadership

Just as we’re dedicated to bridging the urban-rural divide for digital connectivity, we are equally committed to bridging the gender gap across the industry. At Cornerstone we believe in creating opportunities and shining a light on the incredible female leaders who are making a significant impact in the telecoms and infrastructure sectors.

Join us as we showcase the stories and remarkable achievements of our female leaders in our featured article on Women in Leadership. From breaking barriers to driving innovation, these women embody the future of our company and the STEM industry.

Belinda Fawcett – General Counsel and Property Director, January 2015 – Present

A property lawyer by background, Belinda has had a non-conventional route to her current role as ‘General Counsel and Director of Property and Estates’. Her first foray into telecoms was working for Three, where she was heavily involved in developing the structure for the joint venture between the then T-Mobile and Three to form MBNL and was subsequently seconded into MBNL to set up the legal team and develop the strategy for consolidating the 2 networks. She joined Cornerstone in 2015 helping to drive the business through the years of Beacon and transformation to an independent digital infrastructure business as well as taking on the role of Company Secretary and for a brief period as interim CEO. She’s worked continuously throughout her life, moving to three days a week for six years whilst having her children, noting that “you make compromises as you go through your career”. Having recalled meetings where she was the only woman in attendance, gender equality is something she prioritises, with her team at Cornerstone comprising 47% women.

Liz Gardner – Senior Marketing Manager, April 2018 – Present

It’s fair to say that Liz did not set out to be a marketeer, rather marketing found her. In fact, the early part of her career was as a Management Accountant in the NHS. A change in direction then saw Liz move into telecommunications, where roles in IT and Product Management led to her first marketing position. From there Liz held management roles across Consumer, Enterprise, and Partner markets.  After taking a year out following redundancy, Liz joined Cornerstone in 2018 as Senior Communications Manager. Leading a brand relaunch, defining the communications strategy, and navigating the communication demands of COVID, Liz has returned to her marketing roots, joining the newly formed marketing team and facing a new set of challenges. All her experiences, planned and unplanned, have influenced her career journey. She is looking forward to the future both for her and Cornerstone, reflecting “…it’s good to have an open mind, to want to keep learning and be ok with stepping into the unknown. You never know where it might lead!”

Ginette Kilroy – Chief People Officer, October 2016 – Present

Having initially begun her role as ‘People Business Partner’ at Cornerstone, Ginette has since progressed to ‘Head of the People Team’ and now to ‘Chief People Officer’. Being promoted to the Senior Leadership Team, as a woman in her 30’s, is a huge achievement. She notes that in Human Resources “the learning never stops if you want to stay up to date”; her career reflects this, being filled with self-improvement and constant education. Ginette completed a CIPD qualification whilst working in recruitment for the NHS, gained a Master’s in HR and became qualified as a coach. Ginette’s four keys to success are 1. Create your opportunity 2. Be brave 3. Be true to yourself 4. Live in the now, your future will come.

Lindsey Roberts – Head of HSQE (Health and Safety, Quality and Environment), September 2022 – Present

Lindsey rejoined Cornerstone in 2022 as Head of Health Safety Quality and Environment. She began her career in telecoms as a Build Project Coordinator before being asked by her employer if she would take on a project and implement ISO 9001. She initially pursued a career and qualifications in Environmental Management and then implemented ISO 14001 but on the journey, Health and Safety was where she felt that she could make a difference. She worked as a consultant for 5 years in the Construction and Manufacturing Industries but says “Health and Safety in Telecoms is like no other, it’s fast-paced and dynamic, we carry out high-risk activities in quick turnaround in extremely isolated rural areas to densely populated environments which can be challenging when safety is your priority.”

Miranda van Gestel – Chief Customer Officer, September 2023 – Present

Miranda, the newly appointed Chief Customer Officer at Cornerstone, brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for both customers and technology. Having grown up in the Netherlands, US, and UK, she understands the significance of embracing diversity and the strength of different cultures collaborating. Her career began at Virgin, where she was part of the pioneering team that established the first MVNO, Virgin Mobile, in the UK and overseas. Her journey in telecoms continued with roles at Orange and BT Global Services, where she led 4,000 strong teams in Customer Operations and served as VP of Service Operations. After having twin girls, her career took her to the Middle East where she joined Aetna International, a division of CVS Health, as Global Head of Marketing, Brand & Communications. Miranda reflects ‘people discouraged me saying a woman in senior business in the Middle East would be challenging but I had the opposite experience. I think women have an ability to communicate through attentive listening, and we like to nurture collective success rather than individual achievements, so both serve as a great bridge for women to be successful in business’.

Cornerstone Congratulates Maria Malham

Cornerstone is thrilled to congratulate Maria Malham on completing Clarity’s ‘Women in Leadership’ programme!

Last week, Maria Malham, ‘Revenue and Finance Manager’ at Cornerstone, presented at the Science Museum to a room of over 200 people. Maria has recently completed Clarity’s 6-month development programme for both senior and emerging leadership.

Maria’s hard work culminated in a presentation on ‘Internal Bias’. She spoke vulnerably about her personal life, her Polish heritage, and her family, adding that she always felt she had “to work twice as hard and twice as long as the person next to me to feel like I belonged.” Her inspirational resilience was evident throughout her talk and is a good reminder of our capabilities.

Clarity’s ‘Women in Leadership’ Programme

This was Clarity’s fourth year of the programme, and the topic of the event was based on the International Women’s Day theme, ‘Inspire Inclusion’. Structured around both personal and professional growth the Clarity programme works on developing each member’s ‘leadership brand’. Through personality tests, overnight workshops, and team presentations, the course encourages introspection and growth.

Maria’s self-development journey reflects our employee value proposition- investing in our people and supporting their aspirations. Cornerstone looks forward to seeing what’s next for Maria!
